چکیده

Nosocomial infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) has become a great deal of recent concern. Although a number of cephalosporins had been synthesized in the past, few of them was effective against these resistant bacteria. Recently, TOC-39and TOC-50^3) bearing vinyl-thio linkage attached by substituted pyridines at C-3 were reported their high antibacterial activity against MRSAand E. faecalis. However, toxicological feature of the compounds prevented them from further development. Therefore, we have conducted explorative studies to find novel cephalosporin derivatives having favorable profiles with considerable activities against MRSA and VRE mainly by varying the heterocycles. In the meanwhile, Obi4) reported that methylthio linked benzothiopyrans were useful heterocycles to enhance the antibacterial activity. In this present communication, we describe that anti-

Identification of a broadly active phage lytic enzyme with lethal activity against antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium.

Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium infections are increasingly difficult to treat due to high levels of resistance to antibiotics. PlyV12, a bacteriophage lytic enzyme, was isolated and shown to effectively kill both E. faecalis and E. faecium (including vancomycin-resistant strains), as well as other human pathogens. We propose its development and use as an alternative therapeutic ...

Genetic characteristics of VanA-type vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium in Cuba

VanA-type vancomycin-resistant enterococci isolates from bloodstream infections in Cuba were genetically characterized. Enterococcus faecalis isolates were assigned to sequence type (ST) 28, closely related to Eastern Europe, while Enterococcus faecium belonged to ST262, ST656 and ST1349, and showed different genetic profiles.

Nosocomial superinfections due to linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecalis: evidence for a gene dosage effect on linezolid MICs.

Resistance to linezolid among Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis isolates has been reported in patients who receive a prolonged course of the drug. We report two cases of linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecalis that occurred in patients who previously received linezolid for infections with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. Both isolates had the G2576U mutation in the 23S ...

Nitrofurantoin is active against vancomycin-resistant enterococci.

The activity of nitrofurantoin was tested against 300 isolates of Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, and Enterococcus gallinarum. No isolates tested were resistant to nitrofurantoin (MIC, >/=128 microg/ml), including vancomycin-resistant E. faecium isolates with vanA- and vanB-positive genotypes and vancomycin-resistant E. gallinarum isolates. We conclude that nitrofurantoin may provi...

Evaluation of a PCR Assay to Detect Enterococcus faecalis in Blood and Determine Glycopeptides Resistance Genes: Van A and Van B

Background: Bacteremia due to Enterococcus faecalis is usually caused by strains resistant to most antibiotics. Effective management of the disease is dependent on rapid detection and characterization of the bacteria, and determination its sensitivity pattern to antimicrobial drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate a more rapid and reliable assay for simultaneous diagnosis of enterococc...
